IFS Chief Cook Course Graduation

The IFS training facility, in the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) in the Philippines, has graduated a new group of trainees who will bring to our clients improved skills in cooking, menu planning, inventory management, sustainability and safety and hygiene inside the galleys. After a week of training, including theory and practical lessons, six trainees obtained the IFS Chief Cook Course attestation, whilst all seven attendees were awarded with the MAAP Certificate of Completion. One Chief Cook who stood out was Samuel Guarin. Samuel has been a seafarer for more than 20 years, the majority of this time with our client Fugro, and he impressed the instructors with his skills and attitude during the course. “I have been able to send my four children to school because of my sacrifice as a seafarer, and I’m delighted that all of them have now finished school and obtained a degree,” says Samuel. During the training, this Chief Cook’s long track record was valuable to other trainees and instructors, who were able to exchange lessons learned and experiences, for the benefit of the group.

“I have been able to send my four children to school because of my sacrifice as a seafarer, and I’m delighted that all of them have now finished school and obtained a degree”

“I still want to be a seafarer and be able to save further for years of retirement,” says Samuel. His story is one of many Chief Cooks who reach a new level in their skills and knowledge, by finishing the IFS training course as part of their journey into the IFS way of working on board vessels. Samuel was one of the Chief Cooks who was trained on best practices on order management, as well as inventory and menu planning, which is to achieve efficient catering and be on track for better sustainability and efficiencies for our clients. By learning how to use the IFS Vessel Interface (IVI), Chief Cooks understand better the advantages of an interface for orders and overall supply management, which prepares them better for life at sea. “I’m very happy to have learned how to use IVI, and the additional cooking and baking skills during the training,” said Samuel.
