The recipe is easy: eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains prepared with healthy fats, eat red meat and unhealthy fats sparingly, drink water instead of sugary soft drinks, limit the use of salt and above all be ACTIVE.  Although everybody knows these golden rules, applying them seems much less easy, in particular on board of a ship.  Limited space, continuously changing conditions and, depending on the region, limited access to fresh ingredients, drastically decrease the options to create an overall healthy environment.  Despite these known limitations it is of the utmost importance to continuously look for all possible options to optimize the health and hygiene level on board of your ship .  The ship's cook and steward play a vital role in this process. Serving healthy and varied meals, taking into account culture difference among the crew, knowing which ingredients you can get in which region...are just a few of the basic principles that make the live of the ship's crew more pleasant.

REDUCE SUGARY DRINKS

Instead of high calorie soft drinks, drink water with a flavour of for instance lemon, orange or even cucumber.  It is very tasty and very refreshing

EAT FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES

In case you can choose, use fresh fruit and vegetables before you use frozen ones.  Try to avoid as much as possible tinned products.  The amount of nutrition in tinned food is very limited.

EAT MORE SLOWLY

Some quick weight control tips when being on board of a ship: be active, choose smaller portions and eat more slowly.

FRYING OIL

Using too much frying oil and heating it on too high of a temperature is bad for your health and might cause cancer in the long run.

Soon the IFS Academy will offer a dedicated "Healhy cooking" training, helping your ship's cook to apply the basic health rules in their daily cooking activities.  Eager to find out more, get in touch with us or consult our dedicated IFS Academy site.  In the meantime download below document to further improve the health of your crew.
