For many years now, an independent IFS affiliate, is authorized to administer ship's cooks certifications. To help make the process even easier and ensure your success, we can provide you practice tests and specialized preparation courses at the IFS Academy.
Obligatory minimum requirements regarding the proof of competence for a ship’s cook serving at sea.
- 21 years or older
- Having a sea service of at least 36 months in the kitchen of seagoing vessel;
- Pass a theoretical and practical exam that show you meet below Certification Competence Standard

Efficient management of stock
Composition of a balanced menu for the ship’s galley
Calculation of the quantities/portions and ordering of provision
Excellent knowledge of dishes
Excellent knowledge regarding hygiene, safety and MARPOL
Preparation of A4-dish course
Preparation of bread and pastry
